After paddling 1.5 miles through the red mangrove channel, your guided tour opens up into Laguna Grande. This protected body of water within the Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve is where the main event takes place.

Swimming is strictly prohibited to protect the fragile ecosystem. You will stay in your two-person kayak the entire time.

The Open Lagoon

30 minsSwirl paddle for brighter glow

This massive, dark body of water is where dinoflagellates concentrate to create a blue-green glow. Swirl your hand or paddle gently in the water to see the reaction. Faster movements stimulate the microscopic organisms and create a brighter glow.

At the center of the lagoon, groups raft their kayaks together. Tour guides explain the fragile ecosystem and point out constellations. Look up at the sky while you float. The nature reserve has very little light pollution, making it an excellent spot for astronomy.
